Pictograms

Pictograms are sheets with images on them that are relevant to a business or service. If a customer is having trouble with communication these can be used to help.

Pictograms are available for many business and service types. A template is available for businesses and services to make their own if preferred.

Several examples of the pictograms laid out

Who they are for:

  • These are designed to be used by staff who have completed the video and quiz training which is available on our training page.

Where to keep them:

  • Put a copy at each counter and register, or where customer service interactions occur.

  • We also suggest putting a copy near the window for customers to see as they are walking past. This shows everyone how inclusive the business or service is. It also means that customers can bring it to the counter with them if they know they would like to use it.

  • The printed copies we supply as part of the program pack are cello-glazed for durability. If the business or service is printing them, or if they need them to be waterproof, we recommend they laminate them.

How to use them:

  • Offer the pictograms to customers if you’re having trouble communicating. The pictogram can be used even if the customer has an accompanying support person as the customer may like to be included in the conversation too.

  • If the customer chooses to use the pictograms, offer them to hold it as you both communicate with each other and point to the relevant pictures to help you understand each other.

Choose the pictogram below that’s right for your business or service:

Before downloading, please note:

  • For businesses and services enrolled in the Are You Inclusive program, the most relevant pictogram will be provided to you. If you need more, please contact us for extra copies as up to 20 copies are provided free.

  • If you need more than 20, would like a different one, or you’re not yet part of the program, please download the one most relevant to you below.

  • Pictograms are available in two formats:

    • regular formatting for home or office printing, and

    • with crop marks for professional printing.

  • We recommend professional printing for the best results.

  • We have restricted the editing of these documents because they are copyrighted. If it needs to be edited for any reason, please contact us.

  • If none of these are suitable, use one of the templates available for you to make your own.
